Marcel Julien BARON was a French artist born in 1872 who died in 1956. He was a painter and graphic artist who worked mainly in Paris. He is known for his cityscapes, especially those of Paris. This painting was made at the corner of Rue Saint Martin and Rue du Vertbois in Paris around 1910. It depicts the Tour du Vert Bois, a vestige of the enclosure of the Saint Martin des Champs clos, converted into a fountain for Parisians. It was used as a prison by the ecclesiastical justice of the priory of Saint Martin and its dungeons were very deep. It has been preserved over time and still contains medieval defenses, the watchtower in particular ... After narrowly escaping destruction to allow the continuity of the facade of the National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts in 1877, it was restored. In 1876, the fountain was threatened again with destruction but, thanks to the intervention of Victor Hugo, it was restored in 1882 and moved to its current location. The fountain of the Vert bois or fountain Saint-Martin is located at the corner of the rue du Vert bois and the rue Saint-Martin contiguous to the wall of the enclosure of Philippe Auguste of the former priory of Saint-Martin-des -Champs , current Conservatoire national des arts et métiers in the 3 th district of Paris . It is unknown what the name was of the hotel on the left side.
