Maria Jacoba Johanna Karthaus was born on December 11, 1916, in Semarang (Java). Died in 2006. She studied from 1934 to 1941 at the Royal Academy of Art Amsterdam and the Academy of Art The Hague. After completing her studies, she sold an oil painting she had made during her studies to the Utrecht goldsmith Leo Bron. This prompted her to start her own studio in Amsterdam instead of entering teaching. In 1947, she married Mr. J. Stakenburg, and between 1948 and 1958, she had seven children. Because of this, her painting temporarily took a back seat until she was able to resume her work more seriously in 1975. Initially, she painted still lifes in oil, later watercolor landscapes, and returned to oil painting in her later years. Her work has been exhibited in various places such as Deventer, Tilburg, Alkmaar and Amsterdam and is included in private collections and art lending institutions in Eindhoven.
