Etching "a Turkish funeral" from 1889. Catalog Van Wisselingh No 60 (mentioned in pencil at the bottom left).
This is an etching on handmade Dutch paper with watermark. On the back of the etching is a collector's stamp: vE. Loose-leaf and never framed. Image size 8.5 cm x 13 cm. Sheet size 22 cm x 33 cm. Signed and numbered in pencil (No 39).
Marius Bauer (1867 – 1932) was a Dutch painter. He became most famous for making etchings and lithographs with Eastern scenes. After an apprenticeship with Salomon van Witsen, the art dealer Van Wisselingh discovered Bauer's great talent. With his financial support, Bauer left for Constantinople to draw and sketch. The eighty etchings with which he returned were so good that they assured the 21-year-old artist of a lifelong collaboration with the renowned art dealership Van Wisselingh. Bauer mainly made etchings, watercolors, and oil paintings of Eastern cities, camels, elephants, Arabs and mosques. His style can be described as impressionistic but is also influenced by the Hague School in both technique and use of light.
