Mart Kempers werd opgeleid als grafisch ontwerper en illustrator aan de Kunstnijverheidsschool te Amsterdam, d latere Rietveld Academie. Naast zijn vaste opdrachten was hij ook vrij beeldend kunstenaar. In 1964 won hij de Werkman prijs. Belangrijke thema's zijn het landschap, al of niet in combinatie met architectuur, mensen, dieren en stillevens. Veel ideeën deed hij op tijdens reizen naar Frankrijk, Italië en Portugal, maar ook in eigen land bracht het polderlandschap van Noord-Holland, Friesland en Groningen hem tot het maken van vele aquarellen en grafiek. Zijn kleurgebruik is tonalistisch. Met de voor hem zo kenmerkende bescheiden, ingehouden kleuren - veel aardkleuren en blauwen - schiep hij een verstilde sfeer in zijn werken. "Iedereen heeft een vader in de schilderkunst en die van mij was Morandi", zei Kempers altijd als je hem vroeg naar zijn inspiratiebron.
