- Mart Kempers was, among other things, a painter, graphic designer, draftsman and illustrator.
He was educated at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Amsterdam, which we now know as the Rietveld Academy. He was taught there by Mart Stam, among others, although Kempers later indicated that he could not fully identify with the Bauhaus philosophy. In the period after the Second World War he worked for some time as a graphic designer. During this time he made, among other things, 250 drawings for a new Bible edition of the Dutch Bible Society. After many years of working on commission, he made his debut in 1973 as an independent artist in paintings and graphics. He taught illustration for many years at the Royal Academy in The Hague.
