Description
Work by this artist in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
Dimensions: drawing 25x33cm; frame 38x47cm work of approximately 100 - 110 years old mattheus johannes maria (matthieu) wiegman (zwolle, may 31, 1886 - bergen (north holland), april 5, 1971)[1] was a dutch artist. He was a painter, draftsman, muralist and stained glass artist, and his hand is also known for prints and book covers. He also made mosaics. Wiegman attended the trade school in alkmaar. He arrived in bergen in 1911, after completing his studies at the national academy of fine arts in amsterdam between 1905 and 1909. Together with leo gestel and arnout colnot, he was one of the most important painters within the bergen school. He greatly admired the work of paul cézanne. In 1909 he made the design of his first religious painting, the preaching of saint willibrordus. During his career he made many religious representations. The painters of Bergen pointed out the new possibilities to him. Wiegman participated with great pleasure. He mainly devoted himself to the luminist work. He also regularly went to france to work there. He was a member of the dutch artists' circle. In 1918 he was approached for a professorship at the amsterdam academy at the age of 32. Stained glass window in the valerius clinic (1938) gradually the optimistic element in wiegman's work came to dominate, until the last 20 years of his life, in which he used the brightest and hardest colours, colours that were very unusual. Important for wiegman's work were his still lifes inspired by his friend de zarate. wiegman preferred to use the objects to be painted to fill the background. In Italy, in the coastal town of Rapallo, he put a meter-high mosaic of the angel Raphael on the blind wall of a house of Bergense friends of his, Chris and 'Polletje' Dekker. In his hands the angel holds a cloth with the Dutch inscription 'this says God the Lord'. In 2018 the angel appeared to still be there in very good condition.
