Schilders volgde zijn opleiding aan de Akademie voor Industriële Vormgeving Eindhoven en de Academie voor Beeldende Vorming Tilburg.
Hij woont en werkt in Tilburg.
Het werk van Mattie Schilders wordt gekenmerkt door een soberheid, zowel in vorm als in kleur. Een belangrijk thema voor hem is lange tijd het landschap geweest. Vervolgens kreeg ook het menselijke figuur zijn interesse, en is hij gedaantes in de natuur gaan afbeelden. Van grote invloed zijn zijn vele studiereizen geweest, die hij onder meer heeft ondernomen naar Amerika, Italië, Egypte, Rusland, IJsland, Marokko en Denemarken. Het werk van Mattie Schilders is opgenomen in verschillende rijks-, gemeentelijke, bedrijfs- en particuliere collecties.
