Nico Verhoeven was born into a Catholic family. His father was a teacher. Verhoeven attended the HBS training in 's-Hertogenbosch from 1938 to 1944 and already started writing verses (sonnets) at that time. After the war he kept himself above water with various jobs in journalism and moved to Rotterdam. He then also lived in Amsterdam for a while, married the artist Truus Hagman (pseudonym Toyke de Wilde) and went to live in Epe in 1949, where he had a job at the Nieuwe Apeldoornse Courant.

From 1967 until his death, Verhoeven lived with Judith Boer (pseudonym for Valeska Judith Satsuki, 1935-2013) with whom he made text and image drawings. Their joint Printoezie and his personal Described Magazines were resonated with the public and in the press. In 1966 he became a teacher at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven.
