Nico Vrielink was born in 1958 in Reusel, in the south of the Netherlands, the son of a glassblower, and it was his father who recognized his talent. He studied at an art academy in Belgium, entering at the young age of only 10. He stayed there for seven years and spent the next few years building a solid foundation as an artist. Not that his father had that in mind for him: he was to become a primary school teacher. The life of an artist offers no security whatsoever, according to Vrielink Sr. Nico's childhood was spent in an atmosphere of narrow-minded provincialism; the family's limited intellectual horizons significantly limited his scope. For a young boy, this isn't a problem at first: after all, safety is important for children.
