Durieux studied drawing, painting and graphics at the Academy Minerva in Groningen. He hasn't done that for many years now. The drawings were initially study material for his paintings, but in recent years they have become more independent. He converts the drawings he makes outside into a painting in his studio. That is not a literal copy, he freely adjusts the composition and size. The performances meet our need for peace and contemplation in this busy world. Here the silence has been pushed to the maximum and every blade of grass can be viewed individually. The landscapes of Durieux evoke a longing for a lost harmony with nature. The landscapes of Peter Durieux (1951, Sassenheim ZH). are oases of peace where one can linger quietly and contemplate the beauty of nature. Forests, a meadow with a fence or a stone wall are carefully depicted in detail. Sunlight sweeps evenly across the scene; there is no wind, no unrest, everything is still. Peter Durieux derives his ideas from his travels to France, where he regularly works with colleagues or alone. There he walks and makes sketches of places that fascinate him. He does not paint exactly what he sees. He bends the composition of the image to his own will, whereby fantasy and reality flow into each other. Disturbing elements are omitted or things are shifted slightly to get a more satisfying result and to make reality a bit more beautiful than it is. In the end it is the composition, the division of the surface, the play of light and dark and the use of color that counts, not the realism of the image. The artist does not depict people in his paintings. We do, however, always see the presence of the human hand in structures, fences, houses, etc. They are elements that fit harmoniously into nature, as if the human presence only adds something and does not detract from its surroundings.
