Petăr Petkov (Peter) Lazaro v (Bulgarian: Петър Петков Лазаров) (born 22 December 1958 in Plovdiv) is a Bulgarian/Dutch artist and graphic artist.
Life and work: He has lived in the Netherlands since 1990 with his wife and child and works in the city of Groningen. He studied graphic techniques at the University of Veliko Tarnovo. Virtually unknown in Bulgaria, Peter Lazarov is one of the few living artists whose work is included in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
His work can be found in the Museum Meermanno in The Hague, the Museum of Fine Arts in Okinawa, the National Library of Congress in Washington, Yale University, and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
Lazarov, who is a member of the British Society of Wood Engravers, uses various printing techniques, such as wood engraving, woodcut and lithography, sometimes combined into a work of art. His expressive style contains characteristics of the Bulgarian tradition and at the same time the influence of Dürer, Rembrandt, Escher, or Willem de Kooning.
In 2003, he visited Japan to work with papermaker Sensei Fujimori-san, considered a national treasure in Japan. Today, Lazarov makes his own paper, using ancient Japanese techniques. Lazarov is probably the only Bulgarian artist in possession of this knowledge.
He illustrated numerous private press books with work by authors such as Louis Paul Boon, Atanas Daltchev, Cor Jellema, Kavafis, Emily Dickinson, Charlotte Brontë, Victor Hugo and Archimedes.[source?] In 2002 he founded his own private press, Pepell-press op, for limited editions of handmade books. In 2006, two of his books, namely Shoji and Melancholi ..., were chosen from the 50 best bibliophile editions in the Netherlands for 2004-2005 (Mooi Marginaal). In 2007, a major exhibition of Lazarov was held in Shanghai, China, where 200 engravings were sold.
In October 2008, Lazarov was one of the centerpieces at the World Graphic Exhibition in Beijing, China, when he was chosen by the Organizing Committee of the World Congress of FISAE as one of the 10 best graphic artists in the world when it comes to working on the area of ex libris and small graphics. It was the first time that such an honor was bestowed on a Bulgarian artist.
Since 1991, three portfolios with graphics by Lazarov have been published by the Nobilis Foundation. (Source: Wikipedia)
