  • Piet Klaasse (1918–2001) was known as a teacher, illustrator, and independent visual artist. He taught for 34 years at the Rietveld Academy and its predecessor, from 1947 to 1981. Klaasse called himself a "primitive follower of observation." Capturing movement became his specialty. He achieved great fame with his drawings and watercolors of horses and jazz musicians, often drawn on location. Several books were published on this subject. In his later years, he also discovered landscapes as a favorite subject.

It seemed as if drawing cost him no effort, and he threw everything onto the paper in a single breath; the reality was different. Drawing something well always required the utmost effort, as he stated. He worked endlessly on his drawings. Sometimes he would change something just before the opening of an exhibition. Klaasse summarized his own work with the words: "illusion of movement."

Books about his independent work: Piet Klaasse. Hippograph Competition. van Holkema en Warendorf, Bussum, 1975. Piet Klaasse, Jan. G. Elburg. Piet Klaasse Draws Horses. van Holkema en Warendorf, Weesp, 1983. Piet Klaasse, Mark Gardner, J. Bernlef. Jam Session, portraits of jazz and blues musicians. Moussault, 1984. Piet Klaasse, J. Bernlef, Astrid Bouwman. Illusion of Movement.
