De Amsterdamse schilder Piet van Wijngaerdt wordt, samen met Henri Le Fauconnier, beschouwd als de theoretische grondlegger van de Bergense School. Hij schilderde landschappen, figuren en krachtige bloemstillevens in een kubistisch-expressionistische stijl, waarbij onverwachte kleurcontrasten en de werking van licht en donker een belangrijk uitdrukkingsmiddel waren. Voor zijn landschappen vond hij meestal inspiratie in het boerenland ten Zuiden van Amsterdam. Na 1941 werkte hij meestal in en rond Abcoude. Musea: o.a. Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Frans Halsmuseum in Haarlem en Haags Gemeentemuseum.
