Beautiful abstract work by Piet Wiegman. Colorful painting with mostly cheerful subjects in the style for which this interesting artist is known. Piet Wiegman (1930-2008). Born in Heemstede. The full name is Petrus Jacobus Maria Wiegman. Son of painter-illustrator Jan Wiegman and cousin of the Bergen School painters Piet and Matthieu Wiegman. Received first instructions from his father Jan Wiegman. His father advised him to become a painter. He was apprenticed to Piet Kloes in Bennebroek. He traveled to Mallorca with his uncle Matthieu Wiegman. There he mainly drew cafe scenes that he could sell to make a living. At that time he produced very strong compositional work, not only in oil paint but also in lino. At Piet's house it was a coming and going of local Haarlem painters and writers. The last years of his life were plagued by illness and his production declined.
Piet Wiegman has had lessons from PC Kloes for several years, he is also self-taught. He paints, draws and etches in an expressionist style. His subjects are; people in groups, cafes, terraces, portraits and landscapes. He makes striking drawings. Piet Wiegman was, among other things, a member of 'Art is our Goal' in Haarlem.
