- Den Besten trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam. He studied with Johannes Gerardus Heijberg, Alexander van Maasdijk, and Ferdinand Oldewelt. In 1921, 1922, and 1923, he received the Royal Grant for Painting.
- Den Besten created murals for Tuschinski in Amsterdam, the Grand Theater Pompenburg in Rotterdam, Café Central in Gouda, and the Holland-America Line's Nieuw Amsterdam. Much of Den Besten's work has been lost over time, including during the bombing of Rotterdam. In both Amsterdam and Gouda, his work was hidden for years following renovations. After restorations, the original work resurfaced. In Tuschinski, it was a depiction of eighteen female figures, and in Gouda, thirteen female figures in Art Deco style.
Den Besten was also a graphic designer for Van Nelle and a color consultant for Sikkens. In 1964, he received the Leuve Medal on the occasion of his seventieth birthday.
