In Nijmegen wordt op 23 januari 1948 de Nederlandse kunstschilder Poen de Wijs geboren. Van 1966 tot 1971 studeerde hij aan de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. De Wijs heeft met zijn werk een interessante ontwikkeling doorgenomen. Waar zijn werken in het begin nog heel abstract waren, werden ze gedurende de jaren steeds realistischer. Zijn eerste realistische aquarellen dateren uit 1977, vervolgens heeft hij een oeuvre opgebouwd van meer dan 800 werken. Door deze eerste aquarellen werd de Wijs bekend in Nederland, maar ook in het buitenland heeft Poen de Wijs succes geboekt. In onder andere Indonesië, Duitsland, Zwitserland, USA en Spanje zijn er tentoonstellingen georganiseerd van Poen de Wijs
Poen de Wijs was in hoge mate geïnspireerd door klassieke muziek en theater. Hij schilderde heel thematisch en dat is terug te zien in verschillende werken van de kunstschilder.
