Iconic large vase by Jaap Ravelli from the 1960s. The vase is in excellent condition, has the original sticker and is signed twice in the bottom.
Jaap Ravelli's ceramics are undoubtedly among the most recognizable in Dutch ceramics history of the twentieth century. His company in Valkenburg (ZH), which existed between 1947 and 1977, was responsible for a large number of mainly series-produced articles that played a major role in decorative design in the post-war Netherlands.
Jaap Ravelli was born in 1916 in Princenhage. In his youth he spent several years in the Dutch East Indies and several years on Curaçao. After studying at the National Institute for Drawing Teachers in Amsterdam and a year at the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam, Jaap and his brother Dick (1919-1980) set up a workshop in the Breestraat in Leiden in the early 1940s. Tiles purchased from tile factory Oosthoek were painted and sold there. During the war years, a building was rented in which a peat oven was built. The first products were made here between 1946 and 1947, after which the company moved to Valkenburg and 'Potterie Ravelli' was a fact. Jaap became the artistic brain, Dick took care of the business in the background.
