De van oorsprong Haagse schilder en graficus Rob Brandes volgde een kunstopleiding in Amsterdam. Ook kreeg hij les van de graficus Ap Sok, de illustrator en politiek tekenaar Lex Metz, en van de schilder en beeldhouwer Johan van Zweden. Brandes verpandde zijn hart aan de hoofdstad, betrok hier zijn atelier en schilderde vele voorstellingen waarvoor Amsterdam inspiratiebron was. Later werk bevindt zich op de grens van figuratie en abstractie, met ‘beweging’ als overheersend kenmerk. Snel, licht, intuïtief en suggestief zijn evenzeer typeringen voor werk uit deze periode, dat soms herkenbare elementen heeft, maar dat vooral voortkomt uit de verbeelding. Brandes is lid van het Amersfoortse kunstenaarsgenootschap De Ploegh. Zijn werk is opgenomen in rijks- en stedelijke collecties.
