After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, Robert Picault (1919-2000) moved to Vallauris at the end of the Second World War, where he founded the Atelier Callis with Roger Capron in 1946. Two years later he set up his own pottery on the Chemin du Fournas.
He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes and most of his work is characterised by green and brown motifs on a white background.
