He wants to "find" the image. He searches for that which lies beneath the ever-changing appearance of things. The question he repeatedly asks himself is whether a painting can stand on its own. Without him, as the creator, having to say anything about it.
In 2012, Zandvliet filled the walls of GEM in The Hague with interpretations of paintings from art history that interest him. The title of this exhibition is "I owe you the truth in painting." Zandvliet's paintings show how he views works by Jackson Pollock, Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Cézanne, among others.
Zandvliet: "For four years, I've essentially just used other people's paintings as a starting point for my own. And that wasn't to make all sorts of copies or to do it in my own handwriting, but purely to explore how I see, where my interests lie, and therefore what I see when I look at someone else's painting. And by analyzing that image in this way and then ultimately repainting it myself in a different form, I arrive at new solutions, new insights, and broaden my horizons. So it's not about copying, but [about] gaining insight into how I see and where I fit into art history."
"I owe you the truth in painting" is a term that aligns with Zandvliet's quest for the image. An image has its own truth: "If you look closely, you'll find answers to all questions." Even in his early years, Zandvliet sought the essence. His canvases—Zandvliet primarily paints in egg tempera—depict everyday objects. He reduces chocolate bars, egg cartons, bobby pins, cinema seats, and empty screens to planes and lines against a monochrome, plain background. Concentrated energy.
Gradually, these man-made, everyday objects give way to landscape motifs and objects shaped by nature. In the early work, contours separate the object from the background; later, foreground and background become one. Often created with a rhythmic, usually broad brushstroke.
Zandvliet studied at Constantijn Huygens, Christian University of the Arts in Kampen (1987-1992) (now ArtEZ Art & Design Zwolle) and at De Ateliers (1992-1994). His work has been exhibited at venues including the Vleeshal (Middelburg), GEM (The Hague), De Pont (Tilburg), and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
