Tempera is een oude techniek, een speciale verfsoort, bestaande uit een emulsie met kleurpigment. Tempera droogt snel en kan in natte vorm niet lang bewaard worden, omdat het aan bederf onderhevig is. De kunstenaar moest daarom telkens opnieuw zijn verf aanmaken.
