Ruth Van Beek - Untitled (The Arrangement, 2012) - Sold

Ruth van Beek graduated from the Rietveld Academy as a photographer in 2001, but stopped photographing during the course. Van Beek: “I quickly explored the boundaries of the field of work: what exactly is photography and when are you still a photographer? I consider myself a visual artist, but photography is always the starting point in my work. Only, I don't photograph myself, I use photos that already exist.” Van Beek has been collecting found photos since her time at the academy. At first it mainly concerned photos from photo albums, later photos from newspapers, magazines and discarded picture books were added. She developed a particular interest in how-to books from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s on domestic subjects such as gardening, cooking and crafts. Van Beek has now built up an enormous archive, which she uses as the basis for her artworks. Van Beek: “At first I put together books of photos in their original form. But at a certain point I decided to bend the images to my own liking by cutting and cutting them, and by simple interventions to transform them into something new and 'unearthly'. The photos of others form my material to create my own bizarre world.”
