Koeien en geiten staan centraal in zijn werk. Het zijn prachtige lichtdragers en op vele manieren te schilderen. Vaak haalt hij de dieren uit hun natuurlijke omgeving en plaatst ze in een nieuwe, hun vreemde situatie.
Met zijn schetsboek onder zijn arm en zijn laarzen aan gaat Theo vaak het land op en de stallen in. Hij tekent en schetst de dieren en neemt de sfeer van het boerenbedrijf in zich op. In zijn atelier werkt hij de tekeningen uit tot schilderijen.
Het prachtige Groninger platteland met zijn sloten, dijken en uitgestrektheid is voor Theo een onuitputtelijke inspiratiebron.
Zijn regelmatige verblijf op Schiermonnikoog is een andere bezieling voor hem. Het wad, de Noordzee en de uitgestrekte stranden maken indruk op hem. Ze zijn terugkerende onderwerpen in zijn werk.
