Photopolymer etching, only in a mat, unframed. Cutout: 17 x 17 cm.
The artist Thomas Ankum was born in 1961 in Lucerne, Switzerland. He lives and works in The Hague, the Netherlands. In 2011, Thomas Ankum embarked on a seven-week trek through the mountains of Nepal—the roof of the world. It was a journey to himself. The artist, who teaches at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, compares the journey to a profound meditation. In his work, Ankum frequently uses bitmap grid structures, which combine abstraction and figuration. His subjects are often landscapes or forest motifs incorporated into grid structures, where abstraction is visible up close, but figuration becomes visible from a distance. In addition to paintings and prints, he also works with ceramics, bronze objects, photography, and video. Since 2011, Ankum has worked as a printmaking workshop supervisor at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, the same academy where he studied.
