In deze catalogus gaat het over grafisch ontwerp in Japan, van het schrift en drukkunst tot aan reclame. Zo zou de 'Ukiyo-e' (vorm van houtsnede in Japan) de voorloper van het moderne affiche en geïllustreerde bladen genoemd kunnen worden en is de 'Mon-sho' (Japans familiewapen) waarschijnlijk een van de bekendste voorbeelden van het systematisch gebruik van grafische symbolen in de wereld. Maar deze tradities zijn verloren gegaan en het dualisme is opgekomen in de Japanse cultuur vóór de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ook het grafisch ontwerp kon niet ontkomen aan dit dualisme en de westerse invloeden domineerden de Japanse grafische ontwerpen. Sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog is het dualisme overwonnen en is er een eigen expressievorm in het grafisch ontwerpen gecreëerd, maar of dit de oplossing van het probleem is, is de vraag. Het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam bereidde een tentoonstelling voor waar de opvatting in het moderne Japanse grafisch ontwerpen aan het westerse oordeel getoetst kon worden en bracht daarbij deze catalogus uit.
