Two beautiful plates from Royal Doulton from the "Great Sailing Ships of Discovery" collection. Original artwork by John Bentham Dinsdale.
Plate 1 depicts the 'Endeavour': a British Royal Navy research ship that sailed Lieutenant James Cook to Australia and New Zealand on his first voyage of discovery from 1768 to 1771. This is plate no. 8190C from a Limited Edition issued in 1988.
Plate 2 is the image of the Santa Maria: the flagship and supply ship of Christopher Columbus, who discovered America in 1492. On December 24, 1492, the Santa Maria was shipwrecked off the coast of Quisqueya, later called Hispaniola. This is plate no. 336B from a Limited Edition issued in 1988.
