  • Willem Hendrik van den Berg (1886-1970) was born in The Hague. He came from an artistic family; In an interview he jokingly calls himself 'hereditary burden'. His father Andries (1852-1944) was a well-known artist and teacher at the Hague Academy. During his training at the Hague Academy he received a royal subsidy for young painters. His first commission was from Queen Mother Emma who asked him to make a portrait of Prince Henry.

Various exhibitions soon followed after his studies, including with his father and his art friends David Bautz and Theo Goedvriend. He received critical acclaim and his great talent was praised. For study trips he visited Belgium, England, France, Italy and Austria. The subject of his drawings and paintings was often the life of the people in the countryside. In 1913 he met the painter Willem van Konijnenburg. Rabbitenburg's work made a great impression on him and inspired him to a new way of painting. The lines in his compositions became tighter and the details more precise.
