View across the Herengracht to the Leidsegracht from the first or second floor of the house of art collector C.D. Reich Jr. at Herengracht 413. On the left are Herengracht 392 (partially) and 394, Leidsegracht 2, 4, and so on, and on the right is the corner house at Herengracht 396 (mirror image). Reich himself bought the watercolor Witsen made of this view.

Willem Witsen was born in Amsterdam on 13 August 1860 and died there on 13 April 1923. He was educated at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
Student of August Allebé. Teacher of, among others, Dirk Harting and Willem G. Hofker.
Besides the Netherlands, he worked in London, Venice, San Francisco and Indonesia.
Was one of the so-called Tachtigers and very friends with Georg Hendrik Breitner.
Painter, watercolorist, and graphic artist. Best known for his Amsterdam cityscapes.
