Wouter Bernard (Wout) van Heusden (Rotterdam, September 25, 1896 – July 9, 1982) was a Dutch visual artist.

Lifecycle
Childhood, education and first years as a painter
Van Heusden was born and raised in the Hillesluis district of Rotterdam. After the evening drawing school at Katendrecht, he took lessons at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts with Antoon Derkzen van Angeren.
Van Heusden established himself as a visual artist in Tuindorp Vreewijk, South Rotterdam. Apart from a few short trips to Paris and Munich, he rarely left this part of the city. He initially made a name for himself locally as a painter of portraits and still lifes. The latter often had a surrealist character and were in line with magical realism and surrealism.
Although he was originally mainly a painter, he showed no paintings between 1940 and 1962. In the meantime, he developed a very personal painting technique, in which he pursued the atmosphere of the etchings. These paintings contrasted strongly with the prevailing trends and were received with mixed views.
Wout van Heusden was a member of the artist group R 33.
Further work as a graphic artist
Later graphics took over, initially lithographs, later only etchings. He developed a unique technique with aquatint that contrasted with lines, creating a magical, dream-like atmosphere.
In 1959 he received the Leuve medal. National fame followed in 1962 through a major retrospective exhibition in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Other museum exhibitions followed, as well as awards, including the Rembrandt Prize from the municipality of Leiden in 1966. The city of Rotterdam awarded him the Wolfert van Borselen Medal in 1975.
In the meantime, Van Heusden studiously stayed out of the spotlight ("The Hermit of Tuindorp") and avoided contact with colleagues and galleries. At the end of his life he became more accessible. Van Heusden rarely wanted to sell, his work is therefore difficult to find and he disappeared from view after his death.
The National Print Cabinet, the Dordrechts Museum and the Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem have representative overviews of Van Heusden's graphic oeuvre, and a number of paintings are in the national collection, managed by the Cultural Heritage Agency.
