De Vier Paddestoelen (1920-1944)

The Four MUSHROOMS

(Utrecht 1920 – Utrecht 1944)

In 1920, four former employees of St. Lucas, named JC van Ham, K. Mertens, CJ van Muyen and E. Snel, founded De Vier Mushrooms. They strove to produce simple and well-formed pottery. In addition, the products had to be affordable for everyone. Due to the little experience with turning pottery, the products were mainly cast. The work up to 1924 is characterized by the thick shard, red-baked clay and a light gray tinted background. In the later period of the company, when Jan van Ham was the only remaining founder, the quality of the products and the decoration improved. During the economic crisis in the 1930s, high-quality decors became too expensive. Also, for an unknown reason, there was a switch to more rotated products. During the last two years the company was led by Kees van Moorsel.
