Ger Meinema (1939)

Ger Meinema (1939)

Ger Meinema was born in 1939 in Kubaard, Friesland, followed courses at the Tilburg academy and the Rietveld academy in Amsterdam. He had his first exhibition at the gallery “De Sphinx” in 1969 in Amsterdam. In the 1970s he worked in a surrealistic style with themes of men and women with grinning contorted heads in bizarre interiors. They symbolized the hopeless isolation of people withdrawn into themselves, yearning but unable to contact. Work in important foreign museum collections such as the Thysen (now located in Madrid). In the 1980s he withdrew for longer periods to Greece and mainly painted landscapes. From the 1990s, in a third period, he returns to the human figure with images that evoke associations in a more undefined way
