Henk Olijve (1965)

Henk Olijve (1965)

Henk Olijve (* Eindhoven 1965) studied at the Royal Academy of Art and Design 's-Hertogenbosch from 1988 to 1992. Olijve is a real painter; he works meticulously with oil paint on panel. In this he joins the Dutch realistic painting tradition. He also makes murals and decorated ceramics on commission. He is one of the few Dutch painters of the moment who frequently deals with the theme of the working person. Usually the panels on which Olijve works are no larger than one by one metre. He depicts two or three men on it, seldom more. Those men are very similar; they are an alter ego of the painter. Although he always takes himself as the main character of his work, the paintings cannot be seen as self-portraits. They are not analyzes of his person. Olive only uses his appearance as a coat rack for the people on the panel. The men are always doing something. Without much mutual contact, they are busy with a job that demands all their attention and concentration. It is not clear what kind of job it is. Sometimes the scene takes place in a bathroom, on a lawn or a construction site, sometimes the space is undefined. Usually the figures are dressed in work overalls or work trousers and sometimes in what looks like a football uniform: a black and white striped shirt with white pants. Occasionally they have bare the upper body. They often wear a cap on an almost bald head. At their feet are flip flops or sturdy work shoes. Occasionally, in addition to these tough men, there is also a somewhat more sluggish type, given his outfit, which consists of health sandals, shorts and a shirt with spencer. The men don't seem to talk or consult each other; they look past each other. They often squat, stand with their backs to the viewer, or the viewer sees them from the side. In any case, he is never involved in the performance. At first glance, the job to be done gives the impression of being small and simple. But the meditative and concentrated atmosphere that the paintings radiate makes the viewer realize that he is mistaken and that this is an extremely important assignment. As a result, the performance prompts you to think about the appreciation you have for such workmen.
