Matthieu Ignace VAN BREE (Antwerp 1773 – Antwerp 1839)
Matthieu Ignace van Bree received his training at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts and continued his studies in Paris. He was a painter, draftsman, and printmaker, primarily creating historical pieces and portraits. His early work belongs to Neoclassicism, featuring subjects from classical antiquity and carefully constructed figure compositions. Later, he focused more on events in Dutch and Flemish history, in which Flemish Baroque played a larger role. In addition to his artistic practice, he was a teacher and, from 1827, director of the Antwerp Academy.
