Robert STRANGE (Kirkwall 1721 – London 1792)
Robert Strange trained as an engraver in Edinburgh and subsequently honed his skills in Rouen and Paris. He was a printmaker and draftsman, specializing in reproduction engravings after paintings by Old Masters. His oeuvre includes portraits as well as religious, mythological, and historical depictions. During an extended stay in Italy, he studied and drew paintings that served as the basis for his prints. Through linework and hatching, he translated the interplay of light and tonal variations of paintings into black and white. His work contributed to the dissemination of European painting through prints.
