De Werkschuit

Founded in 1950 - dissolved in 1988

The Werkschuit Foundation

Before the start of the Second World War, people were already thinking about the education of the future. After the ideas of the German Reform pedagogy, the Werklplaats Children's Community was founded in Bilthoven. The ideas of the Werkschuit also arise from this. The Werkschuit's function was the artistic education of children. The founders had in mind a platform where they could experiment. Children were observed to develop new ways of working. The Werkschuit Foundation was established with the help of a private donation. The Werkschuit is a former sand barge in the Amstel. For more than 30 years it has been an example for artistic education in the Netherlands and beyond. From 1980 the Werkschuit moved, and the name also changed several times to Stichting Kunstelijke Vorming Amsterdam, Kunst en Co, Kunstweb and eventually the foundation got its current name MK24.
