Ai Weiwei (Chinese, 1957–)
Guardian, 2024
A shimmering, conceptually rich screen print in which Weiwei depicts himself as a modern “Door God” — a protective figure traditionally placed at thresholds to ward off evil. The work combines self-mockery with cultural symbolism and transforms the artist’s public role into a totem of resistance and vigilance. Thanks to an innovative technique using glitter and a metallic base layer, the image lights up through a red veil, revealing refined details in the negative space.
2-color screen print with gold-colored metallic glitter base layer
Printed on 410 g/m² Somerset Tub Sized Radiant White paper
Signed bottom right and numbered bottom left: 486/1601
Dimensions: 60 × 60 cm
Released on 15 February 2024; includes certificate of authenticity
Insured shipping with track & trace.
