AJ Barnes (USA, 1962) undeniably treats the women he photographs as sexual objects but his images also explore the conflicts between art, eroticism and sexuality. The thrill of the primal urge combined with aesthetic pleasure and emotional complexity create a unique experience that is hard to match. The importance of erotic art has been undermined throughout history, but it has the same value as any other art genre. It does what art should do: it arouses the viewer’s desire.
The distinction between art and pornography is one that the law has struggled with for centuries. There is still an inevitable overlap between art and pornography that makes it difficult to easily distinguish between them. Art invites the viewer to appreciate the work as more than just a physiological response. Art is clearly aimed at aesthetic experience while pornography is solely concerned with sexual arousal. The two are incompatible. Ultimately it is the viewer and not the judiciary who determines whether something is artistic or pornographic. As always it is the viewer who completes & validates the labours of the artist.
