Albert Jozef Claeys was a Belgian painter born in 1889 in Eke and died in 1967 in Deinze. He was educated at Sint-Lucas and at the Academy in Ghent under the supervision of J. Delvin, Metdepenninck and G. Minne. Called up in 1916, there he drew hundreds of portraits of fallen soldiers at the front. He settled in Mullem in 1923, where he mainly painted alleys, churches, interiors and portraits. From 1932 he moved to a house in Deurle in the Leie region, which he would sing about in a masterful way. He also occasionally painted still lifes.
