Antoon Vo(r)stermans was born in Tilburg but lived and worked in Helmond. He belongs to the generation of painters who often created dark works, mostly landscapes.
So, in terms of subject matter, this still life is quite a departure for him, but in terms of painting style, it suits him well.
The canvas leads me to suspect that it might well date from the war period. There also appears to have been a restoration on the back that I cannot find on the front. So either that is not the case, or it was done very well.
It is in a revamped frame.
Vorstermans is documented at the RKD and also in Pieter Scheen.
