Offered for sale: a beautiful watercolor by the famous Indonesian artist Basar Idjonati (1901-1990).
The watercolor is signed “Basar” in the lower left corner and dates from the 1930s. The artwork is framed and behind glass.
The scene depicts a row of houses, with two people working on the veranda and a third person at the end of the row.
Basar Idjonati painted in the Mooi Indië style, an art movement that developed at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. He was born in Bandung, in present-day Indonesia, at the time part of the Dutch East Indies. His older brother Suwardja and the artist Abdullah Suriosubroto encouraged him to start painting.
In 2018, a biography of the artist by author Darrell John Kitchener was published, titled Basar Idjonati: A Forgotten Indonesian Mooi Indie Painter.
