In the work of Bert Loerakker (born 1948), the tension between nature and geometry forms the core of his artistry. His youth, marked by personal choices and contradictions, permanently shaped his artistic sensibility. This duality translates into an oeuvre in which emotion and reason, freedom and order, are in constant dialogue.

Loerakker evolved from figuration through abstraction to a distinctly geometric visual language in which nature never completely disappears. In his paintings, often constructed as diptychs, he juxtaposes expressive, nature-like forms with stark, abstract structures. This clash evokes reflection and invites the viewer to look slowly and attentively.

After the devastating fire in his studio in 2008, which destroyed his entire oeuvre, Loerakker found the strength to start over. His work became more poetic, freer, and continually reinvented. By consistently seeking contrasts, he reveals painting as a living process in which nature and order are inextricably linked.
