=======================================================
Charles Mertens (Antwerp, April 14, 1865 – Calverley, England, February 20, 1919) was a Belgian draftsman, painter, and etcher. Mertens studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He produced landscapes, portraits, and genre pieces. During the First World War, he resided in England. He was part of the group De XIII and is regarded as a precursor to Impressionism. He was a co-founder of the group Kunst van Heden, a Belgian association of visual artists and art patrons, founded in Antwerp on March 1, 1905. Along with Piet Verhaert, he was an important representative of the Antwerp School at the end of the 19th century.
