Very beautifully cast bronze medal by Christina Nijland.

The medal is in beautiful condition.

It had been years since the Association published a three-quarter portrait: such a portrait appeared at the commemoration of the Swedish botanist and naturalist Carolus Linnaeus, in a design by Christien Nijland. Linnaeus was the originator of binary nomenclature for plants and animals, a naming system that is still in use today. The portrait has been kept very general with minimal attention to detail; its distinctiveness lies in the way Nijland has applied the lettering around the head and the wig. A loose, ornamental treatment of letters and numbers is scattered across the surface in varying sizes and directions. Linnaeus's locks of hair and the lettering together create a beautiful, lively, and rhythmic composition around the portrait. An approach initiated by her teacher Esser, which is elaborated here in a very personal and inventive manner. This becomes even clearer on the reverse side: in an old tree, a symbol of life, 'Systema naturae' is incorporated into the crown and outer branches, referring to the title of Linnaeus's magnum opus. 'Uppsala', the university city where he was a professor, is incorporated and included in the roots of the tree. (source VVPK)
