Christine Spierings (1943), a self-taught artist, made a successful debut fifteen years ago with figurative-expressionist work. Four years later, she surprised everyone again with a switch to serene, abstract forms. However, that transition proved to be only temporary, for in 1993 – after a five-year hiatus – she made her return with what appears, to this day, to be a definitive choice for the figurative. With her comeback, she simultaneously switched from acrylic to oil paint. Her comeback is certainly not a return to the Cobra-inspired work of the early period. The faces are no longer Cobra faces, the bodies no longer Cobra bodies, and the same applies to the composition as a whole. Compared to the past, Spierings' canvases are less wild and less busy. However, this does not mean they have become less full or less dynamic. On the contrary, precisely because of the more recognizable forms and the accompanying clarity and – seemingly – greater accessibility, Spierings' work has become increasingly profound. In terms of color scheme, it has become less contrasting, but that does not apply to the effect. There is a stark contrast between the cheerful-looking, flowing colors on the one hand, and the facial expressions of Spierings' characters on the other. The eyes and mouth, in particular, undermine the initial atmospheric impression evoked by the use of color. However, it is not the case that a 'revision' produces an exactly opposite atmospheric impression, for ultimately the colors turn out to match the gaze after all. This is not a gaze of mixed feelings—happy and sad at the same time. Rather, it is a gaze that evokes mixed feelings—that is to say: feelings of confusion—in the viewer, because it is an indefinable, inward-directed gaze. Precisely that is what makes Spierings' work so full and dynamic, and so much less accessible than it appears at first glance.
If you'd like to view the artworks we offer before the auction ends, you're welcome to visit our shop in Purmerend. Please send us a message or email in advance to schedule an appointment. After the auction, you can choose from various shipping (PostNL), delivery (Swift or our own courier), and/or pickup options (depending on the size and fragility of the item). We'll pack carefully and use sufficient material (bubble wrap/MDF boards) to minimize any damage. For multiple purchases, we'll combine shipping whenever possible to keep costs low. Pickup is possible anytime up to one month after purchase! If you need more time, that's always negotiable. Our artworks are often loose-leaf or in the wrong frame – a professional mat or new frame can truly complete your purchase.
