Claire Bonebakker lived and worked in Veere for a significant part of her life. Along with Mies Callenfels-Carsten, Lucie van Dam van Isselt, Anneke van der Feer, Sárika Góth, Jemmy van Hoboken, Ada Góth-Löwith, Ina Rahusen, and Bas van der Veer, she is considered one of the Veere Joffers. She was also a member of the association De Zeester, an artist collective for women. The German painter Ernst Richard Dietze was her teacher, as was the originally Swedish painter Anders Osterlind, who lived in Paris. Due to her flamboyant lifestyle, she occupied a unique position in the Veere art scene. Her paintings are primarily found in private collections. She exhibited in Amsterdam, The Hague, and in 1953 also in Paris. In 1937, Bonebakker painted a portrait of the Indonesian princess Gusti Raden Ayu Siti Nurul Kamaril Ngasarati Kusumowardhani. She painted primarily flowers, cityscapes, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits in a late-Impressionist style, using watercolor, ink, oil paint, and pen. In the 1950s, her work became more expressionistic with a more exuberant use of color. She exhibited regularly, including in Paris, where her work was praised for her zest for life and sense of color. In addition to painting, she also designed textiles and interiors. Her work reflected her personality: flamboyant, decorative, and expressive. =====================================================
