A young woman releases a dove from her hands. A profound humanist, Guillaume Corneille, a traveling painter and member of the Cobra movement, often celebrated the union of peoples and freedom. This work is also a manifesto of Modernism for its clarity of form and line. A worthy heir to Matisse, Corneille chose a joyful palette and a drawing style with generous curves: he often liked to repeat that he was the "painter of happiness." The red reaches a hypnotic dimension. Like Picasso, the dove is a recurring animal in his work.
