Was leerling van de Akademie voor Beeldende Kunst in Den Haag en van C. Kruseman. Woonde en werkte aanvankelijk in Den Haag. Verhuisde in 1875 na de dood van zijn moeder naar Bouvignes bij Dinant ( België ). Hoewel ook verdienstelijk landschapsschilder, werd hij vooral bekend als schilder van paarden en mensen in allerlei situaties: op de paardenmarkt, op de jacht, in het circus, bij wedrennen en ringrijden, in de stal, enz. Deze ets toont een paard dat door de hoefsmid wordt beslagen.
Schermer was lid vam Pulchri Studio. Zijn werk bevindt zich o.a. in de collecties van het Rijksmuseun Amsterdam en het gemeentemuseum in Den Haag. Schermer wordt vermeld in de Pieter Scheen.
