Cornelis Brandenburg was born in 1884 in Wormerveer. In 1902, he moved to Amsterdam and studied at the Drawing School for Applied Arts. As a ceramic painter, he worked at "De Distel" in Amsterdam. He was a pupil of the famous etcher P. Dupont. After this, he concentrated entirely on etching and became the most important etcher of the Amsterdam canals, but also created etchings of Utrecht, Dordrecht, The Hague, and other cities. He created more than 100 etchings of Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam Archives holds over 60 of them. He died in Amsterdam in 1954. A book containing all his etchings has been published.
