Title:
David Adolph Constant Artz (1837–1890), after by H. de Tebera - Rare Original Metal Printing Plate - FramedDescription: A very rare and exclusive original metal calcographic printing plate (matrix) engraved with a burin tool. This is a unique collector's piece, as it is the actual metal plate (made of a high-quality brass/copper alloy) historically used in printmaking workshops to press ink onto paper, now beautifully preserved and displayed as a striking work of art on its own.
Based on the Masterpiece:
This engraving is a faithful reproduction of David Artz's famous oil painting "Jongen en meisje in het duin" (Boy and Girl in the Dunes), created between 1870 and 1890, which is currently preserved in the permanent collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam (Object number SK-A-2591).
The scene depicts a romantic and serene costumbrist courtship between a young local couple resting near the coastal dunes. The artist's signature ("Artz") is clearly visible in reverse on the bottom right corner of the metal plate, fully integrated into the engraving. This masterful technical work was executed by the renowned engraver H. de Tebera.
Technical details & Condition:
- Front: Excellent condition. The incised lines remain deep, crisp, and clean, showcasing a fantastic clair-obscur contrast. It displays a beautiful, stable natural aging crystalline metallic patina.
- Reverse: Good historical condition. It features the characteristic green-blue copper oxide patina around the corners and edges, alongside industrial lamination marks and horizontal residues of old cleaning paste/glue from its original workshop mounting.
- Framing: The plate is tightly fitted and mounted within its original period wooden frame, featuring a wide profile and a front metal plate that reads "Grabado" (Engraving). The back retains its traditional craftsmanship wood-strip mounting and an old hanger.
Dimensions: - Metal Plate: 26 x 33 cm approx.
- Total Frame: 39 x 47 cm approx.
A magnificent, unique, and highly unusual piece for serious collectors of Dutch art, the Hague School, and historical graphic editions.
