DEATH NYC – Dollar Balloon Dog – 2013
A striking work by DEATH NYC, the New York street artist known for her bold combination of pop culture, street art, and iconic imagery.
In Dollar Balloon Dog, DEATH NYC transforms an American dollar bill into a contemporary art object. The balloon dog forms the central motif and refers to the recognizable visual language of the balloon figure, which has acquired an iconic place in contemporary pop art.
The combination of the everyday banknote with the colorful, graphic visual language gives the work a playful yet stimulating character. The use of a real dollar bill as a support fits within the street art tradition, in which existing images and everyday objects are given new meaning.
Money, consumer culture, and popular visual language come together here in a compact work with a distinct urban feel.
DEATH NYC is the pseudonym of an anonymous street artist from New York.
The name stands for “Don't Easily Abandon The Hope”.
Her work operates at the intersection of street art and pop art and is beloved by collectors of contemporary urban art.
